Defining the Operations to Perform
The two basic Wire EDM operations are roughing and skimming.
Roughing
Roughing is the first machining pass along a contour. To perform roughing,
perform these tasks:
1. Select the contours to be machined.
2. Set the Rough cut readout to yes (WIRE EDM PASSES).
3. Set the readouts that control the machine tool.
4. Select the Exec icon. A toolpath is created with one pass around the
contour of the part.
Skimming
After roughing, use skimming to remove any remaining thin skins of material.
Skim passes use successively different generator settings and smaller
offsets to improve the surface finish and part accuracy. There are three ways
that you can perform skimming:
• As a final operation, after roughing and cutting bridges. It assumes that
the part is ready for skimming and that no bridges remain uncut on the
contour.
• Between the roughing and bridge cutting operations.
• Alone, with no other machining operation. It ignores all roughing and
bridge cut operations and assumes no bridges are left uncut.
