If an index string is present and does not account for all the dimensions of a
filtered name, data will be extracted for all the unspecified indices as if a (1-)
specification had been given. If an index string has too many indices
specified for a filtered name, the surplus is ignored.
If no index string exists, all data from the arrays to be sampled are extracted.
If the -names option is not specified, data will be extracted from all arrays for
all indices.
