Firstly, the user has to choose between two methods to calculate the solidification rate. In Method 1, when each node reaches the specified temperature, a point is located along the temperature gradient some distance away and the time that it takes for the isotherm to reach that point is determined.
R is then calculated as that distance divided by the difference in time. In Method 2, R is calculated as the cooling rate divided by the temperature gradient. Method 1 takes longer to compute, but it does not depend on the cooling rate. The results obtained by Method 2 are affected by the temperature levels used to calculate L.
