Previous attempts at simulating FSI have been performed by passing the results from CFD codes (interface stresses) as boundary conditions to a structural codes. Displacements computed by the structural code must be used to update the mesh for the CFD solver.
The limitations of this approach are evident:
Inconvenient problem set-up.
Two-way coupling awkward.
Simulation of transient problem probably not feasible.
FSI problems can be solved at different levels of complexity
Small structural displacements
Large structural displacements
