Overview of HvTrans

HvTrans is an Altair tool that translates solver results files, such as ODB files, to H3D files. An H3D file is an Altair proprietary file containing model or results data or both.

HvTrans runs in GUI mode and batch mode. From HvTrans, you select the results you want extracted to an H3D file. You can also specify whether or not to include model information in the H3D file from the result file or corresponding input file. Because only some information is extracted, the H3D file is usually smaller than the solver output file. This is a benefit. When you want to work with a smaller results file, use HvTrans to create one.

H3D files can be read into HyperView and HyperView Player. HyperView Player

enables your organization to visualize 3D CAE models and results via the Internet. HyperView Player includes a web browser plug-in as well as a standalone executable for both PC and UNIX. It can be downloaded from Altair’s web site www.altair.com and used on Windows for free; no license is required. H3D files are useful when you want to focus in on certain information and share it with others.

H3D files can also be created from inside HyperMesh and from HyperMesh results translators using the –h3d option.

Although HyperView can directly read ODB files and the ODB file from the brake system analysis is only 3.3 MB, the next exercise demonstrates creating an H3D file from the ODB file using HvTrans.

On Windows, open HvTrans by clicking HvTrans in the start menu under Altair HyperWorks, Altair Tools. On UNIX, execute the altair/scripts/hvtrans script to open HvTrans. Below is an image of the HvTrans window and following are descriptions of some of the options and sections in it.

Exercise 1: Create H3D file and load it in HyperView

Create an H3D file containing only the mode shapes for the frequency analysis *STEP. Do not extract the results for the contact analysis or dummy *STEPs to the H3D file. Then load the H3D file into HyperView.

Create H3D file

1. Open HvTrans from the Windows Start Menu.

2. From File, select Open Result File.

3. Select the ODB file BrakeDisc_Complete.odb.

Notice the Current subcase is CONTACT_STEP.

4. Click Subcase and unselect CONTACT_STEP and DUMMY_STEP. Leave MODAL_STEP selected.

5. Leave all the modes under Simulation selected.

6. Leave all other defaults in the HvTrans window set as they are.

7. Click Translate.

8. Specify a location and name for the H3D file you will create.

9. Click Save.

10. From File, select Exit.

The H3D file is created and it is approximately 374 KB.
