The Drafting application is used for creating the drawing of a part. In this exercise you will learn about the Drafting application, its capabilities and basic concepts. You will create a sheet containing several views and drafting entities.
We will use the Fitting_1 part you created in Exercise 1.
Steps to Follow:
1. Enter the Drafting Application
2. Create a Simple View
3. Create a Derived View
4. Assign Dimensions
5. Create a Section View
6. Change View Attributes
7. Add Surface Roughness
8. Align Entities
9. Add Text to the Frame
10. Update the Part
Step 1 - Enter the Drafting Application
Just like when you created a new part document, use File / New, and select Drafting.
In the Profile Card, assign the title Fitting_1.
The PDM drafting icon differentiates this document from the part document with the same name.
Appearance of the drafting application
Drafting consists of two areas on the screen: the Graphic Area (containing the sheets created in the document), and the Drawing Tree representing the structure of the document.
As with all Windows tree features, you can expand the leaves in the Drawing Tree by clicking on the '+' sign. Every leaf has a popup menu (opened by right-clicking), containing the relevant actions that can be performed, in addition to standard capabilities such as Rename, Delete, Cut and so on.
The drafting document is called a drawing. This drawing may contain an unlimited number of sheets.
A new drafting document is opened by default containing one sheet. This sheet is represented by a leaf on the drafting tree. To open a new sheet, you can use the Drawing popup menu command Create Sheet within the Drafting tree, or use the main menu command Sheet / Create New Sheet.
The drawing contains default drafting standards and view attributes. Sheets by default use the standards and attributes of the drawing unless you specify otherwise. You can view these properties and change them via the tree by double-clicking.
You can change the default standard using Tools / Preferences / Drafting / Drawing_and_Sheet / Settings, partly shown below.
If you assign a Frame for sheets, all new sheets you create from now on will use this frame. For now do not check this, and we will manually assign a frame.
We will now add an A4 frame to the sheet.
Expand the sheet in the tree. There is currently no frame defined, as indicated by "NONE".
Double-click on the Frame leaf to open the Frame Settings dialog.
Check the Use Frame box, and select A4. The dimensions of this frame are shown in the Frame Size box.
Click OK, and the A4 Frame appears for the sheet.
Step 2 - Create a Simple View
The View Creation command enables us to create a view of a part or an assembly. Several types of views can be created:
x Simple view - a projection of the part. This view type is created by selecting the desired projection, or by defining the direction of the projection onto another view.
x Derived view - a view created by projecting an existing view.
x Section view - a view created by cutting an existing view.
x Detail view - an enlargement of a specified area of an existing view.
To create a simple view, right-click on the sheet in the tree to open the popup menu, and select New View. (You could also click the icon, or select Sheet / View Creation from the main menu.)
The View Creation dialog contains three parts:
1. The part from which the view is derived
2. The type of projection
3. Scale and rotation parameters
Note: The projection type changes according to the view type (simple view, section view, etc.)
The first step is to choose the part.
Click the Open Cimatron E Document icon. (Do not click the arrow - that is used for switching between a Cimatron E part and a SAT part.)
From the Project Tree, select the Fitting_1 part document.
Expand the Projection options by clicking the arrow. Select ISO.
Position the view by clicking above the title block. You can relocate the view by dragging it.
In the View Creation dialog, change the projection to Front. .
View the result:
As long as the View Creation dialog is open (before clicking Apply), you can continue to change the view.
Change the Scale to 2:1.
View the result; it is obvious that the A4 frame is too small for displaying several projections of this scale.
We need to select a bigger frame.
Exit the View Creation dialog, and change the frame type to A3. How?
x Double-click on the A4 frame icon in the tree under Sheet1.
x In the Frame Setting dialog, change A4 to A3, and click OK.
Now we will move the view to the upper left corner of the frame.
In the tree, double-click on the Simple1 view to reopen the View Creation dialog box. You can also first open the dialog and then double-click on the view. Now drag the view.
Exit (middle mouse button) to confirm the new location or use the Apply button, but keep the View Creation dialog open.
Step 3 - Create a Derived View
A derived view is one created from a reference view.
Pick the view then pick anywhere above the view. The new view is a bottom view of the original view.
Now drag this new view below the original view. The view switches from a bottom view to a top view.
Exit to accept this view.
The derived view is created according to the drafting standard. In the current standard (ISO) dragging the new view below the existing one creates a top view, while dragging the new view above the existing view creates a bottom view. With ANSI, the opposite would happen.
Also, the derived view is aligned with the base view. If you move either view horizontally, the other will follow.
Create a new derived view by reselecting the Front projection and placing the new view to the right of this projection.
Press Exit.
Having created three of the four main views, let us now create an ISO view.
To create an ISO view, pick the newly created Right view, then position the fourth view below it.
Change the projection to ISO, and the Scale to 1:1.
Notes:
1. After you click Apply, it is impossible to change the projection type. Therefore, it is very important that you change the projection type before selecting Apply and exiting the View Creation dialog.
2. If you want to change the default projection for new simple views, select Tools / Preferences / Drafting / View / Simple_View. In this dialog you can change the projection type.
Close the View Creation dialog and rename the views as follows. How? Select Rename from the popup menu, or click twice (slowly) on the view name.
x Simple1 = Front
x Simple2 = Top
x Simple3 = Right
x Simple4 = ISO
We now have our four standard views, and are ready to apply dimensions.
Step 4 - Assign Dimensions
Click the Dimension icon , or select Symbols / Dimensions, or right-click and select the Dimension option from the pop-up menu.
We will create several kinds of dimensions in this step. For details on how to create other types of dimensions, refer to the on-line help.
We will start with the Front projection. Select the two points shown below:
Click above the view to display the dimension.
Do not exit, but move the mouse around the dimension.
You can see various parameters turned on at certain hotspots, such as Tolerance.
This parameter method is used in all Cimatron E drafting annotations: around the symbol there are tips, and each tip represents a parameter. To learn about the tips, refer to the on-line help.
You can change the parameters both in the creating and the editing stages.
