The casting process is used to produce various items from simple shapes to precision parts these days. There has been much effort made to reduce costs and time by efficient process. Lately, through much experimental research, a large part of the process has been improved. Experimental research has been generally carried out to find the effects that filling and solidification patterns have on product quality. However, due to the characteristic of the casting process, there is a limit to how much can be viewed by the eye. This consequently results in limited measurement and observation. Today, process improving research is being carried out through both experimental research as well as numerical simulation. Numerical simulation can be very useful in improving the initial design and validating the design modification as it can provide information on filling and solidification patterns even in areas which are not visible due to being covered by mold.
